Steve Green was this year’s recipient of the John M. Templeton Biblical Values Award for his leadership at Hobby Lobby.

[Recap, from Feb 5, 2013] …Steve Green, President of arts and crafts retail stores, Hobby Lobby, was this year’s recipient of the National Bible Association’s (NBA) John M. Templeton Biblical Values Award. The award is given annually in recognition of a business leader who exemplifies Biblical values in the market place.

“Biblical values are at the core of Hobby Lobby’s business – from closing stores on Sundays to defending religious liberty. The bar has been set high for Biblical values in the work place,” said Richard Glickstein, NBA President. “Steve is an outstanding example for business leaders across the country, and we are grateful for his exemplary spiritual values and his continued commitment to the Bible,” Glickstein said.

The Award is named after John M. Templeton who successfully integrated work and his Christian faith. By using his investing talents to help ordinary people and practicing Biblical values in the market place, Templeton serves as a model to all business executives of faith.

“It is truly an honor to receive the prestigious Templeton award from the NBA,” said Green. “I am humbled to join the ranks of other leaders who are committed to the Bible to guide their spiritual and religious beliefs as well as their business,” Green said.

Oklahoma City-based Hobby Lobby was founded in the early 1970s, a chain of 525 arts and crafts retail stores with more than 20,000 employees in the U.S. The decision to close stores on Sundays cost the company over $100 million in product sales annually. The decision to pay all new employees at least 80% more than the minimum wage is a further reflection of the company’s values. Hobby Lobby also offers Biblically-based spiritual and financial counseling to its employees.

Nearly half of Hobby Lobby’s annual profits are donated according to Biblical principles and for the promotion and reading of the Bible itself. These donations have allowed Hobby Lobby to acquire one of the world’s largest private collections of Bibles and Biblical artifacts, a collection that will be housed in a fifty-thousand square foot Bible museum opening in Washington, DC in the near future. Steve has been at the forefront of this project since its beginning in 2009.

Green was recognized at the annual NBA awards luncheon in New York City on April 15 at the Union League Club. The NBA also made a $25,000 donation to a nonprofit charity designated by Green.

NATIONAL PRAYER

Father, we come to You to pray for our nation, the United States of America.

How You have blessed us through the years, Lord! We rightly sing, “America, America, God shed His grace on thee.” Yet we see trouble in our culture today. We see the breakdown of the family, crippling addictions, and random acts of horrific violence.

Lord, we need Your help in America. In recent days, we have done our best to remove Your Word and Your counsel from our courtrooms, classrooms and culture. It seems, as President Lincoln once said, that we have “forgotten God.” But Lord, You have not forgotten us! You can bless and help and revive our country again.

Scripture tells us that “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people” (Proverbs14:34). Lord, in Your mercy, we ask that You would exalt our country again. We have had a number of great awakenings in America. We have experienced times of refreshing, and revivals that changed not only the spiritual but also the moral landscape. As the psalmist said, “Will You not revive us again, so that Your people may rejoice in You?” (Psalm 85:6)

That is our prayer for America today, Lord. Send a mighty spiritual awakening that will turn the hearts of men and women, boys and girls back to you. You have told us if we will humble ourselves and pray, and seek Your face and turn from our wicked ways, that You will forgive our sins and heal our land. (2 Chronicles7:14)

Forgive us today, Lord, and heal this troubled land that we love so much.

We ask all of this in the name of Jesus Christ.

The Bible says that evil exists

I am currently reading through the Psalms and the other day I was struck by the fact that the Bible states unequivocally that evil exists and that we will have to battle it every day.

For those who do not follow the teachings of the Bible this rocks their world. Mankind wants to hope that one day through the “goodness” that they believe is in all of us, the world will be at peace. I echo their heartfelt desire but according to the scriptures this is foolishness.

Unfortunately, you and I are inherently evil much to the dismay of the Bible skeptic. Man may try to create peace through human endeavor but his efforts can only bring a semblance of peace. It will not last. War and strife will spring up somewhere else.

To quote a famous phrase, “We have met the enemy and he is us.”
